Well after seeing 'Cabaret' - stunning though it was - it was great to go and see something with a little more colour and joy! And we got it in spades!
There was nothing clever about this production. Almost like eating a hearty Cornish pasty after a week of fois gras! It was bright, colourful and I knew all the words.
We mostly went to check out Lee Mead after all the hype of the BBC programme 'Any Dream Will Do', and we weren't disappointed. He was great in the part - even though I was rooting for Ben at the time (at least he got a decent part in 'Hairspray'!).
The show was everything I expected - good choreography, good performances by the principals, and of course, loads of children. Well. It can't all be good!
A couple of things stood out as outstanding to me. First was one of the female dancers. In the 'french number' she comes out and performs a dance with one of the brothers. At one point she is practically lying on the floor, then suddenly she's been hoisted up, all the way around his neck and down into a lunge! Took my breath away!
Second thing was the performances of the brothers. They were hilarious!
Was hoping for a more imaginative staging from a West End show, but a great show anyway!
